About Alba Caffè:
We’re a small female-led team based in Shoreditch / Aldgate East. We run two independent cafes and are looking for an experienced barista to join us five days a week at our cafe inside the Whitechapel Gallery. We’re looking for someone who wants to grow within the team and work closely with us, and gradually take over the role of cafe manager / head barista at our Whitechapel Gallery cafe. We’re the opposite of a corporate chain, and hope that whoever joins us reflects this individuality too.
We use Climpson & Sons coffee, Estate Dairy milk, Cacklebean Eggs etc, and believe in offering only the very best ingredients to our customers, while also keeping the atmosphere accessible and down to earth. As well as serving coffees from the cafe space, we do regular coffee and pastry deliveries to studios within the Whitechapel Gallery building, so you would be responsible for helping to oversee this.
Details:
- Two consecutive days off a week (Sun/Mon or Mon/Tues)
- Sociable opening hours 10am - 4.30pm
- 20 minute paid break, or an hour if you’re ever doing a double shift
- 40 - 45 hours per week - Freelance or PAYE depending on preference
- Optional speciality coffee training program and tastings with Climpson & Sons
- Lunch and free coffees included
- £14 per hour (negotiable after a few months) plus tips
Skills:
- Excellent barista skills
- Friendly and personable with customers
- Positive and collaborative personality
- Good organisation and communication skills
- High standards and willingness to get stuck in and be proactive
- Eye for detail and noticing when things aren’t perfect
- Two years experience in hospitality
- Team focused, with high service standards and good leadership
Role:
- Opening and closing most days, sometimes alongside a second barista
- Dialling in the coffee machine each morning, making and serving coffees (ability to steam milk consistently and make good latte art) and cleaning down the coffee machine properly at the end of each day
- Taking orders and helping to serving our small seasonal cafe lunch menu (toasties, pre-wrapped focaccia sandwiches, salads, soup etc, prepared by our chef Jess)
- Managing and getting involved with all aspects of cafe running, including doing the dishwasher and thoroughly cleaning the cafe each day
- Ordering coffee, milk, soft drinks and take away packaging (can build up to this once you’re settled in) and doing weekly stock take
- Implementing processes and daily routines and taking ownership to ensure the cafe is running efficiently, and training the rest of the team to keep up these high standards
